Here. We. Go…

Jen May 6, 2015 9 Comments 4784 Views

We have spent many hours, first dreaming, then planning, and now, finally, making things happen.  We are going to drive through Africa!  We are not the only ones who have made this trek, and for that we are grateful.  Their experiences have helped us to form a plan and vision for how we want our trip to be.  We will begin by shipping our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to South Africa.  Once there, we will purchase a Conqueror trailer to tag along with us on our adventure.  Our plan is one of enjoyment and meandering that will lead us up the eastern side of Africa until Kenya or Ethiopia.  At this time, we will most likely loop south and eventually head west and north, coming out at Morocco.

This website is to keep all of you updated on where we are, what we are up to and to inspire fellow travelers and give you our honest opinions of gear and services.

For us, this is a life change, not a vacation.  We yearn for a slower pace where working and receiving a paycheck are less important than seeing what is around us and experiencing life.

If you happen to be in Maun at the end of next month or so, stop in at Mckenzie 4×4. (http://www.maunselfdrive4x4.com) In the middle of Sept. , I will be at Zikomo Safari Camp(http://zikomosafari.com/) for a couple weeks. Then at the end of Sept., I will be in Mana Pools. Reserved a couple campsites, and if Zimparks gets it sh@t together, Game Count for 3 days. The highlight of my whole trip is Chitake Springs – best campsite for the self drive in all of Africa. If you have Time Warner cable, check out the program “When lions attack”. Campsite is right next to the riverbed and the action.

Stop in and I will give you some help planning your trip through East and Southern Africa. I bought and kitted out 5 series 3 landrovers in the ’90’s and drove all over. From Cape Town to Ethiopia, Including to the Congo border of Uganda to see the gorillas a couple times.

After a month of camping, bushwalking, game drives, cooking on a campfire, gazing at the stars of the Southern Hemisphere, catching up with old friends, etc., sadly, I must catch a plane back to California. For me, the shortest trip to Africa ever.

    Cheers
    Robbie

      Robbie,

I sounds like we won’t get to Africa, let alone Botswana and Zimbabwe until after you head home. Our plan is to ship over in early November and catch a plan by the end of that month. We will stay in contact with you though, in the event that you are back while we are still on our trip. Thanks,

      Jared

Some might say that we have a lot of spices… I w Some might say that we have a lot of spices… I would agree. But we don’t like to skimp on flavor and are always up for new recipes.
Today was a spice inventory day. Top up the spice jars and figure out where we are lacking.
I like to buy my spices from @thespicehouse . They are a great quality spice, but the seller for me, apart from other quality spice providers is their Flat Packs! They cost about the same as a jar of spice in the grocery store, but come in this great resealable flat package, and a bit larger quantity. I don’t need more spice jars, just more spice! Also, flat packs ship free! They are a great option for us foodies that live on the road.

Not quite the trip to Tucson we had envisioned. W Not quite the trip to Tucson we had envisioned. We had grand plans of connecting up with a multitude of friends, instead we hung out in camp with colds. Thankfully the sunsets and saguaros kept us company!
Dried mushrooms are a great add to some dishes. B Dried mushrooms are a great add to some dishes. But grating them is a bigger task than I prefer. We have this great little gadget that fits on our immersion blender that acts as a small food processor and spice grinder.
So today, in preparation for tonights dinner, beef and mushroom ramen (not from a package) I made mushroom powder to add to the broth.
